Meet the Editorial Staff
Publisher Kevin Ireland started his career in woodworking publishing as managing editor of American Woodworker during its growth years in the early 1990s. He followed that with four years as editorial director for Rodale Woodworking Books, where he worked with top authors including Bob Flexner, Nick Engler, Marc Adams and Jim Tolpin. Before joining Popular Woodworking, Kevin served as editorial director and editor in chief of Log Home Living magazine and owned his own publishing company in Florida. Always eager to improve his shop skills, he has studied cabinetmaking with Stephen Proctor, hand tool techniques with Peter Korn, and turning with Mick O’Donnell, David Ellsworth and Rude Olsonik.
Editor Matthew Teague is a third-generation woodworker who began building furniture alongside his father long before his mother thought be should be allowed near a table saw. After attending Wofford College in South Carolina and working for five years as a literary editor at The Oxford American magazine, he joined the staff at Fine Woodworking where he spent seven years, and rose to the position of managing editor. For the last several years, until joining the staff at Popular Woodworking Magazine, Matthew operated his own successful furniture-making business, and his designs have been exhibited at the Tennessee State Museum and the Knoxville Museum of Art, and one of his pieces is also part of the permanent collection at the National Museums of Northern Ireland.
Executive Editor Robert W. Lang grew up in northeastern Ohio and has been a professional woodworker since the early 1970s. He learned woodworking repairing wooden boats on Lake Erie and in a large commercial shop in Cleveland. Along the way he studied industrial design at The Ohio State University, and his experience includes building custom furniture and cabinets as well as managing and engineering large architectural millwork projects. He is the author of several “Shop Drawings” books about furniture and interiors of the Arts & Crafts Movement of the early 1900s.

Senior Editor Steve Shanesy is a native of Troy, Ohio, and has more than 20 years experience in cabinet shops. Steve graduated from Ohio University with a BS in journalism and from Los Angeles Trade Technical College with a certificate in cabinetmaking and millwork. He worked as foreman at AE Furniture Manufacturing in Los Angeles — the city’s premier commerical and residential furniture maker. Steve also worked as a promotion manager for the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. in Cincinnati.
Managing Editor Megan Fitzpatrick earned a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Cincinnati, and she’s working on a PhD in Early Modern drama. Lately, she’s been combing Shakespeare for all references to woodworking (thus far, she’s found but two) and filling her house with furniture she’s built. For the magazine, Megan edits copy and writes articles, and is the author liaison.
Online Community Manager Tom Nunlist graduated in 2010 from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Before coming on board with Popular Woodworking, he worked for two years as a magazine editor and freelance writer based in Chicago. Tom is new to the craft, but he’s excited to get into to the shop and begin learning.
Staff Photographer Al Parrish has been hiding behind the shutters for almost three decades. He graduated from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif. in the mid ’70s, and spent the next 23 years in Los Angeles as a freelance commercial photographer where his clients included Cigar Aficionado magazine, Apple Computer, Toyota and the NFL. His roots drew him back to Ohio in the late ’90s, and has been with F+W Publications, Inc. (our parent company) since 1999.
