New Benefit for Subscribers: Get Digital Editions Free

If you're a subscriber to Popular Woodworking, you can now read, search and print the entire magazine online at no additional charge.

And you can get started right now.

The online editions are available through a service called Coverleaf. By simply entering the information found on your mailing label you can instantly start viewing the digital editions from any computer and in any browser.

These digital editions look exactly like the printed version – not like a web site. You can page through the articles at your leisure. Plus, you can:

• Zoom in on photos for more detail.
• Print out construction plans to take to the shop.
• "Clip" pages digitally and save them in a library to come back to them later.
• Search by keyword through one issue (or several issues.)
• Even e-mail pages of the magazine to your friends (they don't have to be a subscriber to read them).

These digital editions are also great for helping you find woodworking products on the Internet. All the advertisements are linked to the advertiser's home page.

The most current issue is reserved and waiting for you at Coverleaf. Here's what you need to do:

• Get your mailing label from your magazine
• Visit www.coverleaf.com/popularwoodworking
• Register using the information on your label
• Start enjoying the digital edition

This is exactly the kind of subscriber sensitivity and service orientation that prompted me to renew my subscription last month. Kudos to whoever came up with this great subscriber benefit.

Slightly off topic, but yet on topic. This idea is great, and I applaud it but .... I note it is not PDF. That is ok for month to month. But for yearly CD/DVD, I *really* hope you remain with the PDF's. On my Mac it means they are fully indexed/searchable, along with all my other WW materials, and openable in native, fast applications. This is a huge boon to usability and usefulness.

That aside, this feature might even get me to be a subscriber instead of the buying off the newstand (AKA Lee Valley check out). Often subscriptions for Canadians for a lot of magazines are *more* expensive then newstand prices, and I never even checked up till now....

With Coverleaf, you can subscribe to the digital edition alone ($11.99/year) or to both the digital and print editions together ($19.96/year). It's all there on the site.

We are *not* going to discontinue the pdf editions of our products. We are big fans of the format's portability and the ability to index them and mark them up.

Hope this clears things up. And I hope this helps our international readers who have supported us through the occasional difficult delivery.

What a day - a new president and digital Pop WW. Thanks so much for your forward thinking. Would love to see the same opportunity for WW Mag. You all are my favorite woodworking guide and support.

Could we subscribe to a combination of the print version and the cd of pdfs at the end of the subscription? I'd pay $5 more up front. At the end it is a toss-up if I'll pay $15 for the cd.

Bryce,

I'll pass your idea to our business unit. We have definitely talked about that as a subscription option.

Chris,

I was just considering which magazines to renew this year as there is a good deal of overlap in content between the fine and popular publications and other journals. All companies have used the web to deliver enriched content, but only some have decided to charge extra for the "privilege" of being an online member. While I admire their accounting department's goal of extending the revenue model, as a user of such services I always found it stuck in my proverbial craw.

When searching for content that I had already viewed in print, it is very frustrating to find it now labeled as premium content after a month or two. To be told that in exchange for a modest fee (compared to the subscription price) I could get "a whole year's worth of access" to content I had alread subscribed to and read but now wanted to view online was just plain insulting.

Thanks to you and the rest of the folks at your company for deciding to take the road less traveled by offering increased value to your loyal subscribers for the same price. It is a virtue not often found, but much appreciated.

This is great news! I've often been annoyed that to read the information I've already paid for at "the other magazine" I would have to pay.

Thanks.

When one of your competitors asked for comments about their online edition, I suggested the pricing scheme you have decided on. The concept of both printed and online versions is outstanding, and I applaud you for reaching a better conclusion than they. I personally like the convenience of having an online version for quick reference - but for me it doesn't compare with the pleasure of sitting down and browsing through the printed version.
